carlos for congress

When Sutter County Deputy District Attorney Tony Carlos called us up to say he was running for Congress we were pretty stoked.

Not only do we believe in Tony's capabilities to do an excellent job if elected, we know that he is a sincere man of the highest integrity and so it didn't take much contemplating for us to accept the project of designing Tony's campaign logo and website!

While we went through several rounds of sketches while developing his logo, Tony decided he ultimately just wanted a wordmark (standardized text logo). We decided to also incorporate a graphical element to make the wordmark more memorable and less traditional.

Tony didn't want the logo to look too far from traditional, so we decided to keep a deep blue and red for the color palette, but to make it more modern we chose a sans serif typeface. The "o" was made to be reminiscent of an American flag, and we included 3 stars since Tony is running for the 3rd Congressional district in California.

We also designed wwww.carlos2012.com with much input from Tony. The website is designed to be engaging and easy to navigate for the visitors. After we designed the site, we handed it over to the web experts at Tandem Web Solutions to bring it to life and they did an excellent job.

We are currently working on customizing the Carlos 2012 twitter and facebook pages, along with some coordinating print collateral. It has been an honor working with Tony and we can't wait to see what the future holds for him!

sunflower natural foods market-advertisments

A couple months ago, Yuba City's oldest and most loved health food store, Sunflower Natural Foods Market, contacted us about vectorizing a new logo concept by Dr. Afato (Sunflower is owned by the Afato Family).

After cleaning up and vectorizing the two designs, we took the initial concept of Dr. Afato and simplified it further. The end result ended up being the chosen concept, and with minor edits, is now the new face of Sunflower Natural Food Markets!

Needles to say, we were thrilled when they came back and asked us to design some advertisements for some free community events they offer.

We created text boxes playing off the organic feel of the letterforms Billy created for the new logo and found a way to cleanly present all the needed information.

These two ads will soon be published in our local newspaper. We also designed handbills and posters to further promote these awesome, free events! Thanks for thinking Different By Design, Sunflower!

eikon clothing

Surprisingly enough, we get a lot of inquiries from individuals and businesses who need to have their logo designs or their original artwork vectorized.

Vector files are created using mathematical equations...they do not use pixels. This allows for the image to be scaled indefinitely without sacrificing quality.

Recently we were contacted by Chris and Manuel Marin who needed to have their original artwork vectorized in order to have it screen printed onto shirts for a clothing brand they started called Eikon Legacy.

It was a pleasure working with these young men and we can't wait to see where their passion and dedication takes them!

Above you can see the original artwork (on the right) and the vector files we created for them (to the left). It's no surprise Billy has quickly gained a reputation for being the go to graphic designer for vectorizing thanks to his talented Adobe Illustrator skills!

happy friday!

In 1984 Steve Jobs introduced the first MacIntosh computer and forever changed the Graphic Design industry. In honor of Steve Jobs' Day we decided to pay tribute to our first Apple products: a 2000 graphite iMac and 2005 pink iPod mini. Our Apple family has grown quite a bit since those first purchases and their innovative products continue to be an integral part of both our personal and professional lives. Thanks, Steve!

interiors by deborah roush

We met Yuba City interior designer Deborah Roush earlier in the year and together we began working on getting her business branded.

Deborah has years and years of experience helping individuals transform their houses into homes and she realized it was finally time to have a brand identity in place. After designing her business a professional logo and print advertisement (that was published in Me And Mine magazine), Deborah decided she wanted to further her branding efforts and so we got busy designing her new business cards and, perhaps most importantly, her first website!

After going through a logo design process with us, nearly all of our clients have wanted to move forward with us designing them websites. In the past we declined. While Billy can do minimal web coding, his passion, our passion, has always been design. We didn't want to offer a service to our client that was time consuming to us and something that we didn't love to do.

That changed when (thank God), Tandem Web Solutions came into our lives! Thanks to their web experts, we now offer our clients web design because the team at Tandem will takes our website designs and develop them with up to date coding.

I would honestly say that the most common mistake we see business owners make in their branding efforts is inconsistency. The logo looks like it was designed by one person..the business cards look like they come from somewhere else, and basically everything looks unrelated.

Being able to now offer our clients both print and web design ensures that their branding efforts remain cohesive. All business collateral is interconnected, and in this unity, they push forward the brand message versus diluting it through mismatched collateral.

To learn more about Deborah, we encourage you to stop by her site! You can also view more of the work we have designed for her right here.

steve jobs: 1955-2011

Today at work Billy went next door to our work neighbor's office and when he came back he looked at me and asked, "Did you hear the news?"

"What news?" I asked. I hear a lot of news every day!

"Steve Jobs passed away."

My heart immediately sank. Even with knowing that he had been battling cancer, the news still felt sadly unexpected.

Since I have known Billy he has always been telling me about the cutting edge things Apple's cofounder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, has done and said.

A couple years ago when Billy and I were in debate mode over if he should really leave Sam's Club, I came across Steve Job's 2005 Stanford commencement speech. You may recall we have posted it here on the blog before.

It's as if everything clicked in those moments of hearing him talk, and when Billy came home from Sam's on his lunch break I said, "Let's do it."

We watched the video clip again together later that night and decided it was really now or never. We didn't want to waste another minute of our days living someone else's life. It was time to follow on our own path!

Of course the speech alone wasn't the deciding factor...we had done the legwork ourselves in getting to a position where we we had the talent and resources to open a business. We had prayed immensely for God's guidance, and we had pretty awesome clients (including Randy Meyer and team) that also played significant role's in building our courage to take a chance.

However, I will never forget how hearing Steve Job's speech made me feel. It awakened a belief in me that somehow had fallen asleep...To do great work, you have to love and believe in what you do. I love and believed in my role as a mother and wife and watching my husband's energy and creativity slowly die with every passing day he logged in at Sam's Club...it was time for a new chapter in our lives. It was time for both of us to do great work that we loved and believed in.

I think I've quoted Steve too many times to count on our business FB page.

He was an innovator by all means of the word. He lead by example and his love for clean design is part of Apple's Legacy.

Billy made the above Apple logo timeline for reminiscing's sake.

Steve. You wanted to put a "ding in the universe". You did.

Our condolences to Mr. Jobs' family and friends. We will all miss him dearly.

1. think BIG

Today marks 6 months since we stepped out of our comfort zone and opened up Yuba City's first creative art and design studio, Different By Design.

8 years ago, when Billy and I first started dating, he told me about how he had wanted to be a graphic designer since he was in high school. He had recently graduated our local community college, and was currently taking a "break" from school, working full time cutting meat at Sam's Club and playing in a band. After seeing lots of his artwork and observing the way he thought in regards to creative problem solving, it was clear to me he had more than enough talent to make his dream of becoming a designer come true, and I began to encourage him to go back to school and get his degree.

I had complete faith in Billy, and often we would talk about how amazing it would be if we could open a design studio right here in our hometown. If we could offer something to small businesses on a level and experience that had never been offered to them before. However at this point, we were both very young and had a small child and were both about to become students again (which meant living off of student incomes!).

He enrolled at California State University, Chico and quickly became remembered by Gregg and Allan (two of Chico State's top design professors and both esteemed designers themselves) as being a talented, dedicated designer. He won a coveted design intern on campus at Union Graphics (where he was later hired) and co-lead a design team that won first place regionally for the NSAC competition for Coca Cola.

Upon graduating, our two young children were only 4 years and 6 months old. It was 2007, and the economy was taking a turn for the worst. Billy had kept his job at Sam's Club all through school and decided to move up where he was at instead of starting at entry level and having to commute somewhere outside of Yuba City, where there was already successful design firms.

It wasn't long before Billy was promoted to a team leader at Sam's Club, then a year or so went by and he was promoted again to Fresh manager. We had just welcomed our 3rd son and while financially we were the best off we had ever been, we never forgot our dream of opening a professional design studio.

Often when emptying pockets during laundry time, I would come across sketches Billy had illustrated on receipts and little papers from work. He also began drawing political cartoons in his "spare" time that were published in our local paper. We began praying about opening a design business. We didn't want to make a move unless we knew God was directing it.

For Billy's birthday that year, I bought him a drafting table to encourage him to keep nourishing his talents. We felt that God was preparing us for a new season in life. I joked with him that "in a year" we would have a studio to put the drafting table in. And late one night while sitting at that drafting table, trying to think of a name for the design business, I said, "What about 'Different By Design'?" I felt as if God had given me the name.

Because Billy wanted to work as partners I thought it was very fitting since he and I (being of the opposite sex) are literally different by design. We see things differently, we think differently... and these God-given differences essentially make us a great team.

On top of that, we felt we wanted our business to be different. We desired and prayed for our business to be a light. That the people who worked with us would see a difference not only in the quality of work, but also in building their relationships with us.

Billy literally sketched out our logo and worked it up on the computer within maybe 30 minutes. And our logo has yet to change. The negative space creating a cross in the center of our logo reminds us of the foundation on which we started our journey.

Billy continued working long hours at Sam's Club...he had now been employed there for over 10 years and was growing more and more tired of working at a job he did not love. We began taking limited design jobs on the side and after 7 months of building a great reputation with our clients, and with continued prayer, we began looking for a space to move the design business from a side, home business, to a full time design studio.

Shortly thereafter we found Erik of Square One Drafting And Design, signed a lease on an empty office space in his building, and before we knew it we were about to embark on living out our dream. We opened Different By Design full time at our studio on May 1st...in one year, just like I had told Billy. :)

Many times people will tell us that we are "lucky". I don't think they mean it in a rude way at all, however I can't help but think, "if they only knew!".

We are blessed. Extremely blessed. But we are not lucky. We worked our little behinds off to get to this point and we continue to work hard every.single.day. We love what we do...but loving what you do does not take away from the fact that it is still work.

Stars did not magically align for us. We didn't have a client base handed to us. We had never owned a business before. And the majority of Yuba City businesses were not founded with a great belief in design as a crucial business investment. But we believed enough to take a chance. We are responsible for not only ourselves, but for our 3 boys. It was beyond scary to walk away from a job that paid great. And because Billy was salary, those paychecks were always consistent. He always hit his bonuses and we finally had private health insurance.

In fact, the day Billy went into work with his 2 weeks' notice in hand, he was actually given a raise. Not many people I know would walk out after 10 years in their current career, especially after reaching the highest level of financial security so far in their life, when the rest of the world is deep in a recession.

But we aren't most people. And I think that has made all the difference. I think many, many people have awesomely great ideas. But to risk everything and step out on them takes another level of faith.

We knew that our talents could help businesses in this town and we believed in that enough to pursue it with everything we have. Life following your dreams is not easy. There are still struggles. There is still wondering where and when your next payment is coming from. But the rewards are worth every bit of that stress and hard work.

We took out no loans and we borrowed no money to start Different By Design. We worked long nights preparing the studio, more often than not with 3 kids in tow. And we couldn't have done it without thinking BIG, and of course we couldn't have done it without God, without our family and friends' support, and without our amazing clients.

When we signed the lease I remember thinking, "6 months? Whoa! What if we don't make it 6 months?" Ha! Well. Guess what. WE MADE IT! Now,here's to the next 6 months!

Remember what they say is true. If you can dream it, you can do it. Stop dreaming, and start doing. You can accomplish whatever you set your mind to.

preparing for a pink october!

We recently designed this advertisement for the back cover of the upcoming issue of our local Me And Mine magazine.

It always feels great to design something for a worthy cause. Don't forget Pink October is kicking off in Yuba City this Saturday, October 1st, with the 14th Annual Race For Awareness at Geweke Field and Larry Geweke Ford.

Feel good and make a difference!

3

Three years ago today, Billy and I exchanged wedding vows in the wonderful church that I grew up in. Though we were together for five years prior to getting married, marriage has still proven to be a pretty crazy journey! I think it would be safe to say that day by day, we are both still learning. With that said, I am thankful for all the great memories we have made along the way, and for the 3 beautiful little boys we are blessed to call our own!

First kiss as husband and wife...

And 3 years later...funny how it seems like a long time, and at the same time it feels like yesterday.

Happy Tuesday, everyone! We hope your day is filled with LOVE!

new brochures

We recently designed these new brochures for the City of Yuba City's Electronic Funds Transfer program.

We enjoyed working with Katrina on this project and we can't wait to see these in circulation soon!

We are moving forward with the color palette and current branding efforts of the City, which is slowly bringing everything to a more cohesive look, and that is so important in branding! Anytime you release marketing materials or collateral that doesn't fit with your brand image or message, you dilute your message and weaken your brand. We are so happy to be working with this great City we call home in strengthening their branding with great design.

We also designed the City's current business cards! You can view them right here.

who would have thought...

...that monsters could be so cute?

We were honored to not only design the invitations, but to also be invited to this monster party for Oliver's 1st birthday!

How clever is his mom? She duplicated the monsters Billy watercolored for the invitations into little cupcake toppers. Pretty sweet if we do say so ourselves!

Hope everyone is enjoyed their labor day weekend...can you believe it's already September?

an Up birthday (part two)

Read about the Up invitations we designed for our son right here.

Part Two...We continued our love for adventure over into the postage, using these USPS "scouting" stamps designed by another former Chico State University alumni, Craig Fraizer.

We also designed these little "Thank You's" to tuck inside the party favor bags.

Overall this custom design is one of my favorites to date...and though I can't speak for everyone, I think a sugary, good time was had by all.

*Up concept art published on the Pixar Facebook page

an Up birthday (part one)

Recently our youngest son turned 2 years old and we decided to have a small celebration honoring what he loves most: balloons and Pixar. We subtly played off of some of the underlying Up movie themes, one being that Adventure Is Out There! We invited our guests to join us in celebrating the "Spirit Of Adventure" which was really just code for come have cupcakes and mingle with us!

Of course we designed the invitations for the party. Billy watercolored the different colors for the balloons to give them an arts and crafts feel, which we felt appropriate for a child's birthday celebration. We even printed the invitations on water color textured paper to keep the playful feel in the completed design.

We seem to enjoy putting our son's face in circular shapes, because last year he was inside a bubble on his invitation, and this year he is floating away in the sky just as happy as he can be inside a balloon.

I love that the invitations carry out an Up theme in a subtle way, versus being loud and in your face or with any characters from the movie on the actual invitations.

rejuvenated

Can't believe Monday has already come and (basically) gone! Did you have a peaceful weekend? We spent the weekend rejuvenating with lots of walks, loading up on art supplies, and working on personal projects.

We came back to the studio today refreshed and ready to help make our clients their absolute best!

We also had a short visit with our friends over at Tandem Web Solutions and brought a little gift over to their son for his birthday. Billy illustrated Spiderman on the wrapping paper to make the kraft paper more "boy like".

How do you spend your time when you want to refresh?

family

"A man should never neglect his family for business." -walt disney

I love this quote by Walt Disney. Being a family that also works together has proven to have it's fair shares of challenges and blessings.

This weekend we had the honor of hanging out with one of our favorite photographers, Josiah Michael. Josiah has captured our family ever since Isaac was just a newborn baby! Born and raised in Yuba City, California, Josiah now resides in Washington, so it was nice to see him on his short visit home.

Thanks for coming by the studio and capturing some new family memories for us Joey!

happy friday!

May your weekend be colorful and filled with unexpected surprises!

Today we finished up some packaging designs for the innovative company Slide Fire Solutions. Below is a picture of some proofs hanging up on the clip board wall at the studio...love those bright pops of color.

And a sweet little surprise that was brought to me today by Billy on his lunch break. What's not to love about a kokeshi girl and freshly picked flower?

Happy Friday everyone!

two!

It just wouldn't be right to let the day go by without wishing our youngest son a Happy 2nd Birthday.

If you've ever come by the studio and it looked like a tornado ran through...well, you can just thank this little guy for that!

monster monday (part 2)...

Remember this post from last week?

Well, the invitations are now completed and they are almost as adorable as the sweet little birthday boy!

I love how the water colored monsters turned out...especially those party hats! Happy Monday everyone!

P I X A R...

Because dreams really do come true! :)

Last month we had the awesome and unique privilege of an inside tour of the world famous animation studios at Pixar.

We were so blessed to be invited as guests of a Pixar employee, Shaun, and his lovely wife Laura and their two sweet children.

To say our whole family loves Pixar would be a vast understatement. To be able to get a peek inside of this amazing world where creativity is king in the workplace...well, it was really a dream come true. The whole trip was so inspiring and reinforced our love for Pixar even more (if that's even possible). There were so many highlights and Shaun and Laura both were so knowledgeable, that it made for a fabulous time.

Here's a few pictures from the day.

After walking through the entrance of the main building, this seating area is to the left.

Wish I could have taken Guido home with me!

I am in love with all the huge art work that was hung all throughout the buildings. Everything was so perfectly detailed. Here is Mater from Cars 2 to the right of the main building entrance.

"The claw is our master.." Isaac making friends with the infamous Toy Story aliens.

I'll be sure to post again with more pictures from our Pixar trip. I think it was the highlight of my summer. Thank you Shaun, Laura, and family!

Heads Together Salon & Day Spa

Yesterday Linda Lomeli, owner and hair stylist of Heads Together Salon & Day Spa, emailed us saying that her sign was officially installed at the salon.

Needless to say we were giddy with excitement and we drove by the salon 3 times yesterday to admire it!

Great job, Linda! It looks amazing and I can't tell you how thrilled we are to see you reinforcing your brand image on the salon signage!

You can see that even in one color the logo still holds its impact...that's the power of good, clean design!

jessica & edward

We recently designed these custom invitations for the sweetest couple, Jessica and Edward. They were so fun to work with and it was refreshing to work with a couple that wanted a nontraditional layout for the type. While I really love everything from the skeleton key to the color choices, I think my favorite part is the doily print on the back. Congratulations on your engagement you two! We are so excited for you to say "I do!".

Instagram photo of the back of their wedding invitations.

Just a little mock up (information has been changed for privacy reasons).

Jessica happens to be a fabulous hair stylist. I thought of her when I saw this vintage hairnet packaging, so I had to pick it up for her!

monster monday...

Billy at the studio today, watercoloring little monsters in party hats for some custom invitations we are creating for a very special birthday boy....while our passion and focus is identity designing and branding, sometimes a little change can be nice.

Little monsters now waiting to get scanned in...don't worry! Their party hats will fit like a glove once everything is said and done. :)

Happy Monday everyone!

strengthening your branding with color

Having always loved well designed (yet still aesthetically beautiful) products nearly my entire life, I became aware of just how bare the baby market was in well and beautiful designed baby gear and clothing when at the age of 18, I had my first son back in 2003.

I am happy to report that since then and now two more boys later, many new brands have stepped forward that offer intelligent designs for babies (and their parents who shop for them!) :) Not to mention that some old staple companies (Gerber and Carters comes to mind) have found ways to reinvent themselves, staying current and modern. I actually now joke with Billy that we will have to keep having babies simply because the gear keeps getting better and better.

However, I think until recently it was safe to say that it has been extremely rare that I came across "character" designs that weren't tacky, gaudy, loud, and a disservice to the artists who had originally created these beloved characters to start!

Sure every now and then I came across a great vintage inspired comic book character tee or Star Wars tee for my boys, but for the most part I have stayed completely away from anything with characters on it. Even when "character" clothes was given to me I just could not stand to put it on my children. Which is a shame, because children (and adults) love characters (from comic book heros to Thomas the Tank Engine to Pooh Bear and everything in between). Yes, everything had been so poorly designed and executed I used to look the other way...until now.

Behold. Character clothing...without...the characters.

I know what your thinking...this isn't "character clothing", right? But stop and think about it. It is! If you follow our blog I am sure you are aware of the fact that we are HUGE Disney Pixar fans...so needless to say I was thrilled when I came across these Disney Cuddly Bodysuits, brand spankin' new from Disney Baby (which is also new and another smart move on Disney's part).

I think what I love the most is that I KNOW whoever developed the concept for using the colors these movies were "branded" with for these bodysuits was more than likely up against a big fight to get these approved. Let's be honest...they cost more than regular bodysuit packs you can buy, so the company is going to want to know why people will be willing to buy these "plain" bodysuits at a higher price.

I can hear the conference meetings now..."We don't think the consumers will 'get' it." "These look great...now what are you screen printing on them." "Um...we are paying you HOW much to 'design' these?" "What do these colors have to do with this movie???"

Thank God someone over there had the guts to bring these ideas to light because though I have NO babies in my home that would fit into these, I have to admit I just purchased 2 sets!

Leave it to a baby's clothing line to be an excellent reminder of how strongly you can tie your brand to color. This marketing tool should not be overlooked in building brand awareness. Whatever colors you chose to market with...OWN THEM!

I can't tell you how many people tell us they think of us every time they see the color orange...and we've only been in business for just over a year! Imagine how much this color association is going to increase in value to us over time.

I will also add that their other Disney Cuddly Bodysuits that do feature actual characters are just as well designed as the "characterless" designs, so the whole collection is really worth checking out.

This line is not available in stores till Fall, however I purchased my sets over at Amazon (another brand leader).

So let's test how strong these "color script" themed bodysuits (shown above) are tied to their respective movies...If you guessed Monsters, Inc and Cars...you are right.

Take the time today to look over your marketing materials. Are you owning your brand colors?

leo lionni

Last year for our son's first birthday, amongst some other gifts we purchased him, we also started off his library collection.

As his second birthday is fast approaching, I've been carefully considering what books we want to get him this year to expand his collection, and of course a library wouldn't be complete without some Leo Lionni!

While I was at Yuba College I took numerous Early Childhood Education classes to be a better mother. I am so thankful for all the knowledge I gained during that time, and I have to say one of the strongest points I took away with me was how important it is to read to your children.

I am glad I have fond memories of my mother reading to me as a child. Not only did it sharpen my communication, verbal, and writing skills, it also rooted in me a deep love for art and creating.

Do you own any Leo Lionni books? Which are your favorite?
